see all reviewsA very fun experience even for first timers who had zero clue about martial arts. The Coaches would adjust the training intensity (time and reps) depending on the different levels of fitness and experience of class goers (1.5 instructors to 3-4 students in off-peak). Lots of variety in exercises and techniques to provide a progressive circuit, combining movements taught earlier on in the session into a longer series of movements by the end as well as general motor control exercises. Training area would be cleaned immediately after class and there were ample hygiene facilities and lockers. Difficulties in understanding verbal prompts would also be quickly resolved via demonstrations.

see all reviewsTwo instructors: 4 students. 2 black belts+ 1 teenage dude + me. My impression with WTF TKD was that it was mainly for acrobatic performances where performers do multiple aeriel flips before breaking wooden boards. However, the masters taught me kicks for realistic combat. Front snap kicks can be used to strike my enemies’ nuts, and turning kicks can be aimed at my enemy’s hips. I remember I had a yellow belt when I was 6. However, I forgot everything and went straight back to beginner’s level. My hips are too tight so I cannot do round house kicks. The teen was much better than me, but I am roughly triple his age, so I do not feel bad.

see all reviewsMiddle-east? Instructor: lots of students today. The Professor taught us how to take my enemy’s back when he is in turtle position, also how to gain the hooks when he is trying to escape, finally to defeat him using a choke which name I do not know. It looks a little like a rear naked choke except the other hand is not behind his head: it is assisting the choking hand with a gable grip. We ended with positional sparring and normal rolls. Because I am a 0 degree white belt, everyone defeated me. The girls beat me, the teenage dude who was half my size nearly submitted me a hundred times, and the huge dude who was twice my size did not even need to move. I was unable to do anything to him lol.

see all reviewsYoung instructor: because I am a zero degree white belt, I cannot even do a forward shoulder roll in a straight line, but the Professor gave us very detailed explanation on how to do it well, and also side break fall. He also had lots of philosophical ideas on how I can pass my enemy’s guard, do the knee on belly, and do the knee slice. Now I finally understand what people meant when they liken BJJ to playing chess.Lots of food for thought. If I can incorporate his ideas into my skills, my technique will improve a lot, giving me higher chances to defeat my enemies.

see all reviewsBlack instructor: two students. We did lots of fitness exercises incouding cycling, jumping jets/star jumps, push ups, sit ups, squats, and even weight training. The professor did not teach new skills, but he asked us to do positional sparring starting with the back taken. This is useful practice because if my enemy jumps on my back, i must learn how to defeat my enemy from there(although IRL probably we would start standing because if I were on the ground and my enemy were not, he would probably just kick me, rather than try to take my back). My partner was significantly stronger than me, and not a beginner like me, so he effortlessly manhandled me lol!

He also showed me how to defeat my enemy using Aoki Lock and toe hold without needing to pass his guard. Because I am a 0 degree white belt, I had trouble switching my hips and arcing my leg out. One of the senpais was very patient and drilled the moves with me repeatedly. I then sparred with a girl, who took my back and trapped one of my defending arms. I was saved by the bell before she finished the choke lol.

see all reviewsHKer instructor: the thailand martial arts surprised me with how complicated they are. There are muay thai dojos everywhere. The way most masters teach muay thai is exactly the same as kickboxing. I was unable to see what is the difference between muay thai and kickboxing. However, this Master shows us the traditional thai martial arts which is significantly more in depth than kickboxong. Krabi Krabong looks like FMA’s kalis/arnis/escrima at first glance. However, when look more in detail, they alsp have quite a lot of differences.

see all reviews3 instructor, 5 students at first. However, one Master went away after a while to teach a private class, and the female master paired up with the girl. In the end, only one Master taught the 4 of us. We did an exercise where my partner pushed my thigh as I was trying to move my leg. The Master said a lot of times we focus only on the arms that are moving, and neglict the legs, which may not be moving. This exercise teachs us to be mindful of both. It is useful because in a real fight, I want to punch and kick my enemies. However, because I am only in level 0, there are nuiances of this art that I do not understand. For example, one exercise is for one person to deliberately not stick to his partner, while his partner must try to stick. If my enemy’s hands disappear, all I need to do it punch him in the face, I do not need to care where his hand went, and certainly do not need to stick to his hands. Unless he has a concealed knife, and the hand that disengaged actually went to pull it out, then it gets threatening.

see all reviewsFriendly instructor. Maybe a bit too friendly? I felt like the rest times were really long and not just because he was correcting form but because he and the other two girls (who seemed to be regulars) started conversing. But to be fair the class went on for an extra 30 mins as well (on the assumption it was only supposed to be an hour). I would’ve like it more if he corrected during the time you were doing it rather than the breaks. The following has nothing to do with the rating a chose but just something I needed to mention, I’m pretty good at conversational canto but really struggled to understand technical terms and what I can only assume were muscle names and things - so it was a bit hard to follow his corrections - has nothing to do with how I rated since I’m sure many would like the extra tidbits of info but it would have been easier for me if he simpled it down to “hands x width apart” “legs wider” “squeeze your core” and where I should be feeling it rather than trying to understand what he was talking about how because it’s a cable and something you can pull down more instead of shifting your body back (?) honestly I didn’t understand all that much. Space was nice and clean :$ felt inviting.
